Nowadays, building muscles and physical fitness are not the only form of exercises that are considered important. People also now focus on improving the size and memory capacity of their brains. This latest fad in fitness claims to enhance the major brain functions such as attention, visual-spatial, memory, language and executive functions.
These brain fitness products come in different forms, but my most favorite are software programs which contain cognitive trainings in the form of games. The types of computer games these systems include are designed to test one’s memory, attention span, problem solving abilities, arithmetic and linguistic skills. Believe it or not, the companies that design these types of software programs have earned millions of dollars from people who wish to give their brains a good workout.
There are some truths about the beneficial impacts that these brain games can give you. In playing games, you are required to concentrate and focus on the objectives of the game in order to win and enjoy the games more. This results to the improved attention span of the player. Also, while playing the games, pictures stimulate vision, especially our peripheral vision. This enhances the visual-spatial capability of the brain. This spatial ability is essential in driving.
In addition, these games are also designed to help you practice and hone your ability to make a quick response. One’s memory is also being sharpened through the constant training.
However, there are still experts who don’t fully support the concept behind these fun brain games. Some argue that people below 30 are the only ones who can possibly improve their problem solving abilities. I don't know if I buy that argument as I am only 33 and they are certainly working for me and many of my friends who are roughly the same age.
Still, others mention that the ability to solve one game, and the exercise you get from playing, can generally apply to most mental challenges. In any case, not all scientists believe there is sufficient evidence to claim these games help.
It has been noted that some people who play these fun games are just finding ways to be entertained and they see these games as a form of stress management. Looking at these fun brain games this way doesn’t necessarily contradict the purpose of brain fitness.
Being free from stress is still an important pillar of having a healthy brain.
No one will disagree that the brain needs constant stimulation and exercise. This may not translate to actually gaining a few extra pounds between your ears, but mental stimuli in one form or another will do your brain a favor.
Just as the body needs regular exercise, the brain also needs regular workouts. One must also remember that fun brain games don’t have to be purchased online. Most brain games that we have all learned to love also serve the same purpose. You can always stimulate your brain by playing chess games, Scrabble and numerous card games. When it comes to your brain it would be safe to say that you need to use it or lose it.
I personally prefer to work my brain out with these fun brain games online! I can get a full brain workout in under 10 minutes per day!
